Welcome to the website of the Galway Healthy Cities Alcohol Forum.

We are delighted to present the new Galway City Strategy to Prevent and Reduce Alcohol-Related Harm (2013-2017). This strategy was officially launched by Minister of State for Primary Care, Mr. Alex White TD on Monday 18th February 2013.

The interest and support from individuals, groups and organisations in Galway City, is indicative of the strong desire to be proactive around an issue that is problematic across Ireland.

This strategy aims to prevent and reduce alcohol-related harm in Galway City by focusing on four key areas:

PreventionSupply Access and Availability Screening Treatment and Support ServicesResearch Monitoring and Evaluation

The anticipated effect of implementing this strategy over the next five years is the following:

  • Improved health, wellbeing and quality of life for people living in Galway City
  • Reduced harmful use of alcohol
  • Reduced alcohol-related harm
  • Reduced incidents of alcohol related crime and antisocial behaviour
  • Increased access to support services for those affected by others alcohol consumption
  • Increased access to alcohol treatment services
  • Reduced prevalence of alcohol at community events and activities
  • Reduced alcohol marketing in local areas.
