The event will look at the issue from a health perspective, from a policy perspective and looking forward to more innovative ways to ensure people who have alcohol or drug issues can access help when they want it.
Speakers will include Suzanne Costello (CEO Alcohol Action Ireland) speaking about the impact that problematic alcohol use has on society and the importance of policy responses at a national and local level.
Dr Gerry McCarney, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and lead of SASSY (Substance Abuse Service Specific to Youth). SASSY provides support to young people under 18 for whom regular drug and/or alcohol use is having a significant negative impact on their day to day life in the Ballymun area of Dublin. Dr McCarney will speak of the importance of intervening early in the context of young people and their developing brains.
Carol Moore Founding Member of Dual Diagnosis Ireland (DDI). Dual Diagnosis is the term used where an individual has both a mental health issue and an addiction to a legal or illegal drug simultaneously. DDI are a volunteer led organisation whose focus is on trying to improve services for people with a dual diagnosis. DDI are currently developing on-line interventions aimed at broadening the reach of helpful interventions to people who want to change that may otherwise not access help.
